Towards Trustful and Resilient Internet

In this project, we propose to set up architectural principles for enhancing trust and resilience in the Future Internet. They come from the observation that the current Internet lacks two major properties: i) flexible identity management and ii) trustful and resilient global routing. Our approach is to design novel schemes and protocols for these two aspects building upon the Domain Name System (DNS). DNS provides a critical service that maps human-readable domain names to IP addresses. A large part of trust in Internet services and applications comes from DNS because users rely on the symbolic names used in URLs or email addresses. We propose to take advantage of the DNS infrastructure to develop a framework for Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) and enhance the BGP protocol with schemes for trustful and resilient global routing —two key objectives for the project are the following:

  1. Framework for Self-Sovereign Identity based on the DNS infrastructure
  2. Enhancement of the BGP protocol with schemes for trustful and resilient Global Routing
